With the Windows 11 release on October 5th, we need to talk about what you need to navigate the transition to Windows 11. Upgrading to Windows 11 is not as easy as it has been in previous versions of windows. Microsoft is making the trusted platform module (TPM) mandatory for Windows 11 installs and limiting upgrades to only a few compatible processors that you can read more about here. Meaning, that that old PC you re-purposed will not be compatible with Windows 11, and you will have to stick with Windows 10 on those computers. Note that Windows 10 Support ends on October 14th 2025, so you will have some time to replace your hardware should you need to.
Like always, I recommend that you do not update to Windows 11 on production units until you have extensively tested Windows 11 to ensure no compatibility issues slow you down. Let me know if you need help setting up your testing environment.
I know many of you are probably in the market for a PC! My advice would be to hold off buying that PC at the moment. With COVID causing supply chain issues, you may be able to buy your Windows 11 pc, only to find some older hardware or accessories that no longer work.
Suppose you do decide to bite the bullet and join me at the bleeding edge! Assume there will be bugs! Some bugs you may be able to live with, and others will want to make you roll back to Windows 10! (I have done the is twice now)
